Re: Proposed Property Tax Increase

Cache County is proposing a significant property tax increase as detailed in the following table.

Annual Impact of Proposed Cache County Tax Increase

Property Type

$100,000 Valuation

$200,000 Valuation

Residential*

$15.62 increase

$31.24 increase

Business

$28.40 increase

$56.80 increase

*Primary residences receive a 45% exemption.

Cache County proposes using the tax increase to fund increased spending for ambulance services.

Cache County taxpayers should consider the following points:

  • In 2002, Cache County increased property taxes 34% to cover the costs of operating a new jail.
  • In 2003, voters raised sales taxes by nearly $900,000 to fund recreation, arts, and parks.
  • This year, Logan City School District raised property taxes by 4.9%.
  • Next year, mayors in Cache County will probably push for a $20 million open space bond.
  • In 2006, the Legislature plans on increasing gas taxes by at least 5 cents per gallon.

Utahns already bear the nation’s 3 rd highest state/local tax and burden in the nation.

A Truth-in-Taxation hearing will be held on December 7, 2004 at 6:00 pm at 179 N. Main , Logan . Concerned taxpayers should attend the meeting and let their opinions be heard.
