RE: Proposed Tax Increase

Farmington City will be proposing an increase in property taxes at a hearing scheduled for August 7th at 7:00 p.m. at the Farmington City Hall located at 130 North Main Street, Farmington. Total proposed tax increase is 28.5%. Including new growth, Farmington City will increase its property tax revenue by 37%. This is the largest tax hike being proposed this year by any school district, special service district, or major city in Utah.

If approved, the approximate property tax increase for $200,000 property would be $52.69 for primary residences and $95.80 for businesses.

Utah taxpayers are among the most heavily taxed in the nation. Utah's state and local tax and fee burden is 9th highest in the country and is 12.6% higher than the national average. Higher tax burdens lead to lower long term economic growth, and elected officials should seriously consider the negative impact higher taxes will have on economic growth and future tax revenues.

The Utah Taxpayers Association is concerned that Farmington City is proposing a massive tax increase. Most Utah cities are forgoing a tax increase this year due to the financial hardships many Utah taxpayers are experiencing during the current economic recession. The Association encourages all taxpayers to attend the public budget hearing set for 7:00 p.m., August 7th at the Farmington City Hall located at 400 South 600 West in Farmington and make their opinions known.
