RE: Proposed Tax Increase

Millard School District will be considering a 1.9% property tax increase on August 8th at 6:00 PM at 160 West Main Street in Delta. With new growth, Millard School District will increase its property tax revenue by 0.4% from the previous year. The proposed property tax increase for a $100,000 property would be $6.00 for primary residences and $10.91 businesses.

Fortunately, the proposed increase is much less than school district officials had originally proposed in June, and district officials should be commended for working to reduce the increase. Nevertheless, since Utah taxpayers bear the nation's 9th highest state and local tax and fee burden as a percent of personal income, elected officials should seriously reconsider any proposed tax hikes.

In 2001, Millard School District's property tax rate was 20% below the state average, but the district's assessed property valuation per student was 185% higher than the state average. This means that Millard School District could generate the same property tax revenue per student as the rest of the state if its property tax rate were 65% lower than the state average.

In 2001, Millard School District spent 23% more per student than the state average.

The Association encourages all taxpayers in Millard School District to attend the public budget hearing set for August 8th at 6:00 pm at 160 West Main Street in Delta and make their opinions known.
