Re: Proposed 6.8% Tax Increase
Morgan County is proposing a 6.8% property tax increase. If approved, the tax on a $170,000 residence would increase from $248.52 to $265.54, an increase of $17.02. The tax on a $170,000 business would increase from $451.86 to $482.80, an increase of $30.94. Morgan County’s total property tax revenue would increase from $1.27 million to $1.37 million, an 8% increase.
County officials intend to use part of the tax increase to for maintenance and operation of the county jail and to increase county employee salaries by 1.5%. County officials also attribute the tax increase to a decline in revenues from the state.
If this tax increase is approved, this will be the second year in a row that Morgan County raised taxes. Last year, Morgan County increased taxes by 8%.
Even without this tax increase, Morgan County’s tax rate is 23% higher than the statewide average for counties. With the increase, Morgan County’s tax rate will be 31% higher than the state average.
Last August, Morgan School District increased property taxes by 9.4%.
Morgan County will be conducting a Truth-in-Taxation hearing on December 17th, 2002 at 6 p.m. in the County Council Chambers in the Morgan County Courthouse at 48 West Young Street, Morgan. The Taxpayers Association recommends that Morgan County residents attend the public hearing and make their opinions known.
