Re: Proposed Tax Increase

Logan City is proposing a 24.6% increase in the city’s total tax rate. If approved, the tax increase and new growth would generate $586,482 additional revenue for the city. The tax impact on residential and business properties is as follows:

Annual Impact of Proposed Logan City Tax Increase
Property   $150,000 Valuation   $300,000 Valuation
Residence*   $37.37 increase   $74.74 increase
 Business   $67.95 increase   $135.90 increase
* Residences receive a 45% exemption under state law. Business properties receive no exemptions.

The Utah Taxpayers Association opposes this proposed tax increase for the following reasons:

1. If approved, Logan City’s property tax rate will be 16% higher than the average property tax rate for similarly sized towns.

2. Utah is currently experiencing severe economic problems. Utah’s per capita bankruptcy rate is highest in the nation and is twice the national average. Increased taxes only exacerbate the problem.

3. In order to stimulate the economy, the federal government has significantly reduced taxes. However, much of this economic stimulus is being reduced by state and local tax increases, such as Logan City’s.

4. Utah’s total state and local tax and fee burden as a percent of personal income is 10th highest in the nation and is 12.5% higher than the national average. Higher tax burdens lead to lower long term economic growth. A tax increase at this time, especially a 24.6% increase, is not appropriate.

Logan City will be conducting a Truth-in-Taxation hearing on Wednesday, August 6th, at 7:00 p.m. at the Logan Municipal Council Chambers, 255 North Main Street, Logan, UT.
